Dear Diary: 5 Hours ’til Departure

Oh, hello there. It’s been a while since we’ve seen one another, how have you been? Oh, me? Thanks for asking; I’ve been swell.

Swell like the the ocean, that is.

Up and down and rolling with the types of experiences and wholehearted emotions that remind you that you’re here and that you’re alive. Life isn’t always forgiving, but just as the wave is capable of swallowing you whole and holding you under until dotted stars start to pop behind your eyelids, the beauty and exhilaration of it never ceases to make that trip through the wringer worthwhile. Despite the lows, the highs have been undeniable and undeniably worthwhile. Life has been alright. Life has been better than alright.

And here I sit, a mere five hours from departure. five hours until the adventure that has been enriching my life time after time again for the past year begins. five hours ’til liftoff, baby. Five hours, and I still haven’t decided how I feel about that.

I’m stoked. That much is certain. Not in a giddy or exuberant way, but from somewhere deep down inside in a place that’s been waiting a long time for this. I’m curious. The one thing I’m certain about is absolute uncertainty. I’m a bit sad. As ready as I am to step onto that plane, saying goodbye hits me right in the feels. I’ve been enjoying myself so much lately, and Toronto has this habit of coming so alive as the temperatures start to rise, that I don’t feel quite done with it yet. That said, I’m also happy. I’m leaving on a high note, and that’s all I can ask for. The other day, somebody asked me if I’m nervous — the first person to pose such a question. It caught me off guard. Nervous? Of all the things I’ve been feeling, it didn’t even occur to me to be nervous. I had to stop and think about it, just to be sure.

Nah, I’m not nervous. What would be the point of that?

Forty-eight hours from now, after three days of my life have passed by (don’t even ask; timezones hurt my brain), I’ll be in Australia. In an entirely different place, on an entirely different continent, on the other side of the planet. That’s pretty cool.

Bring it on.

A Socially Awkward Introvert Prepares to Travel

I can’t think of anything less suited to being an introvert than embarking on an extended journey in a foreign place without a single familiar soul for thousands-upon-thousands of miles. Where one is forced out of necessity to not only talk to, but instigate conversation with absolute strangers who may not even communicate in the same language. Where the road is ripe, as far as the eye can see, with full dorm rooms and endlessly revolving company. Where small talk reigns supreme. Cue the menacing music.

Are you an introvert? Are you sweating yet?  Continue reading

Halloween Around the World

It’s unpopular opinion time: I don’t really like Halloween. I’ll give you a moment to digest that heresy, so go ahead and gasp in shock. Or horror, if you will. ‘Tis the season, after all.

No, it’s certainly not something I particularly dig, but as October 31st rolls around once again, it’s difficult to ignore. It’s everywhere. Everywhere. And it’s got me thinking. It’s got me wondering, actually, and the first place my mind invariably tends to wander when I start to wonder is to the great wide world out there. To different cultures and customs. I’ve been thinking about Halloween and differently named, similarly themed celebrations that take place the world over, and I thought to myself, well, what better excuse to write a blog post do I need? 7 Simple Changes That Save You Money

Money. What more is there ever to say? It’s hard to argue against the idea that it makes the world turn and pokes its nose into every corner of our lives, but I’m sure I’m not alone in a reluctance to admit just how strong its vice-like hold is. Where travel is concerned, that grip is steely. The numbers are king and dictate the whens, wheres, and hows of life on the road. A few extra bucks here and there could make a world of difference in some locations, and with that little notion in the back of my mind, it’s a lot easier to pinch pennies and say no to all the little things that I want but don’t necessarily need. Skipping that second pint of beer here and now could mean saying yes to another beer in Australia next year.  Continue reading

A Quick Stop At The Big Apple

No, not that Big Apple.

Today is Johnny Appleseed Day, and the perfect excuse to share a bit about my recent stop at a roadside attraction commemorating that big, red, iconic fruit!
